Exercise
To reduce the risk of having problems with your health, we recommend you do some form of exercise at least 3 times a week. The exercise must be vigorous enough to increase your heart rate.

A Healthy Diet

Healthy eating makes a healthy body. We recommend you reduce your intake of animal fat, change to semi-skimmed milk and eat more fibre, greens and wholemeal bread. People who cut down on foods such as fatty meat, chocolate, biscuits and cakes, but increase foods like pulses, lentils and potatoes are more likely to be healthy than those who do not.

We also recommend you should not add any salt to your cooking as there is already sufficient in the average diet.

Drinking
You should never drink and drive. The World Health Organisation recommends that a sensible amount of alcohol per week is a maximum of 21 units for men and 14 units for women.

What are the long term effects of over drinking?
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Depression

Smoking

Smoking is known to cause heart and lung disease. Pregnant women who smoke produce smaller babies. If parents smoke, their children tend to have chest infections. If you are interested in giving up smoking, make an appointment to see the nurse.
